Novel vertebral indices in normal and spinal disorder dogs using computed tomography

This study was carried out to derive reference value of normal spine indices, and to evaluate the feasibility of the indices for computed tomography (CT). CT images and magnetic resonance imaging were acquired from clinically normal 12 beagle dogs for normal group and 50 dogs with 56 spinal disorders for patient group. Image acquisition regions were cervical spine (C2 to T1), thoracic spine (T1-T13) and lumbar spine (L1-L7). The measured indices are as follows; the ratio of width to height of spinal cord include dura matter (CR) and vertebral foramen (FR), and the ratio of cross sectional area of spinal cord to vertebral foramen (CFAR). Reliability analysis was performed to evaluate the intermodality agreement. Student t-test and receiver operating characteristic curve was used to discriminate the normal and patient group on CT. Intermodality agreements of normal group and patient group were acceptable to excellent. The highest discriminating level of CR at vertebral body level and intervertebral disc space level were 1.25 or more and 1.44 or more. FR and CFAR had the highest discriminating level at the cervical region only. This report could present the quantitative information for spinal morphometry, and the indices may be helpful for CT screening test of dog with spinal disorder.
